IBM PC-AT Reborn – Emptying the Box

Now on to the fun parts!

Since it was a nice sunny 45 degree (F) day out, I decided to take my modding outside (It was April in MN, if you know, you know)

My nice outside mod station

I decided to start by making an attempt at taking out the hard drive cage that needs to move. This did not go quite as well as I was hoping.

Part way in I realized I couldn’t get all the spot welds I needed to

I needed to drill out some spot welds in order to get the hard drive cage out, but I couldn’t get to all of them. At that point, I turned my attention to the rear PCI slot dividers that also needed to be removed. I had a 12″ drill bit that I hoped I’d be able to get the drill back far enough to get the spot welds.

Did I mention there are a LOT of spot welds holding this thing together?

The requisite “they don’t make them like they used to”, but it is true

Working through all the spot welds I could reach with the drill. 12 in total, I think.

So many spot welds…

Here I have the PCI slot dividers removed, finally. Didn’t appear to have gone too poorly.

PCI slot dividers finally gone

Then again, maybe the back got a bit mangled in the process… I didn’t have a drill bit quite large enough to completely drill out the welds, so a lot of prying and hammering.

The back was only slightly mangled

It was at this point I decided that I’d be cutting off the whole back and just making my own rear brace section. Not a huge deal, as I was already planning to cover the whole back panel with 1 piece of steel anyway.
