Project Intro

Hi all,

This was my first major computer case mod, and my first project log. This is a re-post of the original log, with some modifications to better fir the current preservation of the information.

This project is something that I wanted to do for a while. The back story was that I had always liked old computers (old to the point that they were “classics”). I had an Apple IIgs, Toshiba T2000SXe, and IBM PC-AT (5170) that were all working, at the time.

The Idea

The idea behind this project was that I wanted to do a mod of an iconic old computer (case), which is where I landed on the IBM PC-AT 5170. I will be modifying the case to fit modern (at the time) hardware, but still look like the original PC-AT, for the most part.

The Mod

These are some of the concept pictures, the idea of the finished project sort of visualized with my already owned PC-AT case

The look I’m after

A mock-up of the parts in the case cover on the machine I already owned (but don’t want to modify, as it’s all original and was my grandfather’s)

Hardware mock-up to see if it fits

That is all for this entry, in the next one I’ll get the case I’ll be using and start getting to work!
