Turning an Almost Footed Bowl (Video)

I have yet to successfully turn a footed bowl. I have only tried once so far. Given the title of this blog and the previous sentence, I have not managed to make it work out. I will try again in the future, but I’m still liking the way this bowl came out anyway.

This bowl was turned from a small log of Russian Olive, which was given to me by some family friends back at the beginning of August. I am really enjoying the look of this wood, and with all the inclusions on this piece, it has quite a nice contrast across the piece.

Not as strictly functional as a snack bowl, but perhaps it will be a good conversation piece. I know it has made my preschool aged son ask about it quite a bit.

This was a fun turning, but I almost wish I wouldn’t have spend as much time trying to fill the voids and knots. Once the knot popped out, I decided to make sure I had a functioning piece rather than a pile of pieces. I’m looking forward to trying a footed bowl some other time, but for now at least I’ve got this one!

Anyway, thanks for checking it out!
