I was able to track down an original monitor for the PC-AT, that was already non functional. Then I was able to find an LCD monitor that would roughly fit the same opening that the old CRT occupied previously. I’ll be combining the two here, so I can keep the look but have it work with modern GPUs.
First thing I did was gut the monitor to remove all of its internals.
Interesting that they had painted the inside of it matte black. Anyway, this should have plenty of room for the LCD control boards.
Out with the old parts. Some big components on the PCB, but not all that much stuff in there.
I found a Daewoo 12.1″ LCD monitor that would end up being about 1/8″ larger in both directions, which was about as good a fit as I could find.
I took apart the LCD monitor and got just the screen and controller board assembly out of it. It’s in a nicely packaged and protected metal case.
I had to flatten out the front plastic bezel that used to contour to the curved screen of the CRT that was in it, but once I did the LCD was able to lay flat against the front of the case.
I used some pieces of aluminum screwed in to existing posts to hold the monitor (and a piece of acrylic) to the front of the case.
Testing it out just to make sure it would work.
With that, I could put the rear case back on and had a functioning LCD screen that I could hook up to anything I had, that looked like the original IBM monitor.
That is all there is to this update. A few of the last couple items to wrap up soon, and then I’ll be in the home stretch!
